Stair Stringer Rise, Run & Layout Calculator
Calculate deck and home stair dimensions, exact riser height, tread run, stringer board length, number of steps, and IRC safety code compliance in seconds.

Verified construction takeoff formulas & live variable substitution (IRC / IBC Code Baseline)
1Number of Risers= 6 Risers
Standard FormulaRiser_Count = Round(Total_Rise ÷ Target_Riser)
Live Values SubstitutedRound(42" ÷ 7")
Determines the whole number of vertical steps required.
2Exact Unit Riser Height= 7.000 inches
Standard FormulaExact_Riser = Total_Rise ÷ Riser_Count
Live Values Substituted42" ÷ 6
Must not exceed 7.75 inches under IRC Section R311.7.5.1.
3Total Staircase Horizontal Run= 55 inches (4.58 ft)
Standard FormulaTotal_Run = (Riser_Count - 1) × Tread_Depth
Live Values Substituted(6 - 1) × 11"
Horizontal footprint distance outward from the upper deck rim joist.
4True Stringer Stock Length= 6.23 Feet (Buy 2×12×8' Lumber)
Standard FormulaStringer_Length = √(Total_Rise² + Total_Run²) × 1.08
Live Values Substituted√(42² + 55²) × 1.08
Accounts for diagonal rafter hypotenuse plus top and bottom plum cuts.
Jobsite Engineering Notes & Constants
- IRC Section R311.7.5.1: Maximum riser height is 7-3/4 inches (197 mm). Minimum tread depth is 10 inches (254 mm).
- IRC Section R311.7.5.3: The greatest riser height within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).

Under the International Residential Code (IRC Section R311.7), the maximum allowable riser height is 7-3/4 inches (197 mm) and the minimum allowable tread depth is 10 inches (254 mm). The greatest riser height within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).
Measure the total vertical rise from the finished ground or landing up to the finished upper deck surface. Divide total rise by an ideal riser height of 7.0 inches. Round to the nearest whole integer to determine the exact number of risers, then divide the total rise by that integer to get your exact riser height down to the 1/16th inch.
